June 28, 2017 :: LINNEA LARSON
SOME INSIGHTS FROM THIS SESSION:
- Human potential for massive activation is why people can't get along.
- Working with righteous indignation in image space and talk space.
- Be happy with Vesuvial eruptions--be a blessing to all you meet.
Linnea Larson has worked in most every area of healthcare -- policy analysis and consulting, social work, hospice, lab researcher in dementias and schizophrenia, community mental health, psychiatric in-patient treatment, oncology, renal, graduate school teaching in human behavior, and full-time caregiver for her stepmother for nine years. “You know, I’ve been around the block.”
“I call it ‘sniffing it out,’ following my nose in terms of my interests.” That’s how Linnea described her path to integrating deep knowledge and practice in a huge variety of healthcare disciplines. But the effort was more exacting than just sniffing. At each point of becoming a verified expert in one field of healthcare, she would think, “if I’m actually going to be of service, I need to learn another language.”
One of my goals has been to translate very difficult information between multiple areas -- from clinical work and religion and science -- people who never really talk to each other. This orientation in the world has been both beneficial and a heavy weight.
Born the daughter of a minister in inner city Chicago, Linnea’s journey with meditation has had a similar exacting “sniff-it-out” quality. In her youth, she had spontaneous insight experiences, which lead her to the mystics. In the 70s, she was familiar with Ram Dass's work and other teachers.
It was actually when I got to work in hospice when I realized, even with all I’ve learned, even with all the credentials I have, this isn’t deep enough. That much pain and suffering, there’s nothing you can do to fix it. It is reality, right in your face. And I thought, I gotta find a deeper well. That’s when I started to meditate and look for teachers.
She’s learned from Fr. Thomas Keating, Jon Kabat-Zinn, S.N. Goenka, Jack Kornfield, Stephen Levine, and many others.
I found Shinzen's systematic explanations very intriguing and useful. I appreciate his precision of language. I even transcribed his "Science of Enlightenment" audio series in its entirety so I could read it. I have always felt it’s so important that Shinzen’s work gets out there.
Linnea currently teaches yoga and Unified Mindfulness in Oak Park, Illinois.
LINNEA WORKED ON THE WHITE HOUSE COMMISSION ON COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE POLICY, WHICH MADE RECOMMENDATIONS TO CONGRESS.
SHE WAS ONCE MUGGED AND PUT IN JAIL IN ONE OF THE EASTERN BLOCK COUNTRIES WHILE ASSISTING MEDICAL AND RELIGIOUS FOLKS TO BEGIN CREATING HOSPICE.
LINNEA HAS PLAYED HER VIOLIN IN A ROCK BAND, AND HAS SUNG IN A POLKA BAND.
